Icelandic Health Insurance (Sjúkratryggingar) has signed an agreement with the software company APRÓ for the implementation of the AI system Viti, which is intended to automate parts of the agency's document processing.
An announcement states that the system is currently being tested and will initially be used to process foreign invoices for healthcare services.
According to information from Icelandic Health Insurance and APRÓ, initial tests indicate that the solution could reduce the time spent on manual registration of applications by up to 80%.
The system is based on so-called agentic AI (agentic AI), which can execute tasks in multiple steps. It reads information from invoices in different languages, extracts key details, and registers them in Icelandic Health Insurance's system. Agency staff then review and verify the information.
Áslaug Hulda Jónsdóttir, Director of Development at Icelandic Health Insurance, says the agency wants to start with projects where success can be measured before utilizing the technology more widely.
“Icelandic Health Insurance works with sensitive data. Data privacy and data security are therefore our absolute prerequisites for utilizing artificial intelligence,” says Áslaug Hulda.
According to APRÓ, the system will run on Icelandic Health Insurance's infrastructure rather than in an open environment. The goal is to add more workflows to the solution later.
