Ljósleiðarinn & APRÓ: Sustainability & Independence in Change
Learn how Ljósleiðarinn and APRÓ transformed technical infrastructure with greater independence, better monitoring, and more flexible solutions.
Insights

The telecom company Ljósleiðarinn stood at a crossroads. New strategies and industry trends called for greater independence in their technology team and more flexibility in system management.
They launched an improvement project where APRÓ helped transform their technical foundation. They wanted to move away from unnecessarily complex solutions that made them dependent on outside vendors, and into a more efficient environment. The main goal was to make Ljósleiðarinn's team more independent, with a sustainable solution so they could have more control over their technology direction. Jón Levý, team lead at APRÓ, was part of the project and shares his insights.
The start: technical review and discoveries
"We began with a discovery phase," says Jón Levý, aimed at understanding the full scope, seeing what worked and what didn't. The finding was clear: Ljósleiðarinn needed to move away from licensed systems and take a new approach instead. That meant ending expensive license agreements and building their own infrastructure in their place.
From constraints to freedom
The project was far from simple, Jón Levý acknowledges, and the teams faced several challenges. One was a tight deadline. Changes needed to happen before a new license period kicked in. So the two teams had to work fast and safely.
"We were a bit like a rescue team, coming into systems that had grown and evolved over many years, where bottlenecks had formed but were often slowing progress and new features," says Jón Levý.
Technical solutions: monitoring and architecture
In brief, the project involved setting up a new middle layer between systems to improve performance and stability, along with bringing in better monitoring.
"We set up log agents on all their main systems that gather data in one central place. Now they can monitor the status of all systems in real time and step in before something goes wrong," explains Jón Levý.
User-focused approach to software development
To make sure the new solution worked in the real world, user testing was done with a group of electricians who use the system daily.
"They got to try it, give feedback, and see changes. That was important because we wanted the solution to work for the people actually using it, not just look good on paper."
The result: increased freedom in technical operations
Ljósleiðarinn now has the solutions and tools to run and develop their own technology systems with much greater freedom - something that matters greatly for, for example, job satisfaction.
"They're no longer dependent on one solution or locked into expensive systems. They can now build on the architecture we designed and keep scaling over the coming years," says Jón.
Bragi Reynisson from Ljósleiðarinn agrees and adds:
"The project with APRÓ was a great experience. They came in with a fresh perspective, understood the business quickly, and helped us become more self-sufficient in our own development. It changed everything for us."
Good technology projects are about people and processes
For APRÓ, this is an example of how well-executed technology projects aren't just about code - they're about people, processes, and vision.
